Privacy

With media, one of the biggest issues is privacy. Privacy in relation to media is the invasion of information and data. It’s a common sentiment amongst social media users, that a users privacy is not protected. Facebook sells your private information to private companies so they can target ads towards you. Recently, it was said that Facebook messenger tracks your conversations. Furthermore, it’s common for many users to see data branches. Platforms such as credit karma will notify users when their informations were found in data breach dumps. I’ve lost track of how many times, I’ve gotten emails from credit karma notifying me that my username and password was found in a data breach dump and I’ve had to change my password. No matter how small your social media presence is, how private you try to make your account, nothing is truly private. Something or someone is always watching. However, no matter how frustrating the lack of privacy is, or how angry it makes users, there hasn’t been any steps taken to change that. Most of us still use our social media that are notorious for sharing users private information.

  1. I totally agree with your concerns over privacy on today's social media. In addition to those, I believe privacy is a much wider issue that's risen with technological advancements that lawmakers struggle to stay up-to-date with. While in the past, it was hard for people’s privacy to be violated without their knowledge, with the rise of technology and the internet, people's privacy can be violated without their knowing it. Your image and your information deserve “sufficient safeguards against improper circulation”. In regards to your comments about email scams, its technical term is "phishing" and unfortunately, the number of Americans that fall into it is rising every day. The best solution to avoid such acts would be educating one another and be as alert as possible.
